{"id":2705,"date":"2015-10-13T11:15:13","date_gmt":"2015-10-13T09:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/montonein.it\/en\/?page_id=2705"},"modified":"2015-10-13T11:15:13","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T09:15:13","slug":"church-of-st-francis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/montonein.it\/en\/religious-buildings\/church-of-st-francis\/","title":{"rendered":"Church of St. Francis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-397\" title=\"chiesa san francesco montone\" src=\"https:\/\/montonein.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chiesa.jpg\" alt=\"chiesa san francesco montone in\" \/>The Church of St. Francis was founded around 1300 and it was placed on the hill where the house of <strong><em>Olivi<\/em><\/strong> and the house of <strong><em>Fortebracci<\/em><\/strong> were located. It was similar in style and architecture to the edifices built by the Mendicant Orders: linear and simple shapes, an only nave with a polygonal apse and a trussed roof.<br \/>\nWhat remains of the frescoes, which can be dated back to the second half of the 14th century, suggests that a large decorative improvement was made soon after the edification of the church. The finest decorative results had been reached in the next century, when the building became the <em>family church of the Fortebracci<\/em>, which generously contributed to his improvement providing it with altars, furnishings and paintings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-398\" title=\"chiostro chiesa san francesco montone\" src=\"https:\/\/montonein.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chiostro.jpg\" alt=\"chiostro chiesa san francesco montone in\" \/>The apse is decorated with frescoes, painted between <strong>1423<\/strong> and <strong>1424<\/strong> by <strong><em>Antonio Alberti<\/em><\/strong> from Ferrara, which represent scenes from the <strong>life of St. Francis<\/strong> and scenes of the <strong>Last Judgment<\/strong> and were commissioned by <strong><em>Braccio da Montone<\/em><\/strong>: he is commemorated with his coat of arms, the ram between two cheetahs, and those of cities he conquered.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Carlo<\/em><\/strong>, son of <strong><em>Braccio<\/em><\/strong>, had the altar on the left wall built in <strong>1476<\/strong>; then, his son <strong><em>Bernardino<\/em><\/strong> made it decorated in <strong>1491<\/strong> with the fresco by <strong><em>Bartolomeo Caporali<\/em><\/strong> showing <strong>St. Antonio of Padua<\/strong> between John the Baptist and the Archangel Gabriele with Tobiolo (Tobias).<\/p>\n<p>The generous contribution of <strong><em>Margherita Malatesta<\/em><\/strong>, Carlo&#8217;s wife, was the completion of the opposite altar on the right wall, built between <strong>1474<\/strong> and <strong>1482<\/strong> and intended to house the gonfalone (banner) realised by <strong><em>Bartolomeo Caporali<\/em><\/strong>, which is today preserved in the Museum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Church of St. Francis was founded around 1300 and it was placed on the &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":2405,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-2705","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
